Rules

1. Introduction

1.1 The Australian Chess Grand Prix is a series of rated weekend (or extended weekend) chess tournaments held across Australia throughout the calendar year. Tournament organisers register for the Grand Prix (GP) in advance and pay a GP registration fee. Individual players score points in their best events and the GP standings are published thoughout the year. All prizewinners must be Australian residents approved by their State Associations. In the event of ties, prizes will be shared.

1.2 The Australian Chess Federation (ACF) has appointed Brian Jones of Australian Chess Enterprises as the Grand Prix Director.

2. Tournament Classes

2.1 There are five classes of tournament. Eligibility is determined by the cash value of the guaranteed main prizes offered in the Open section. (Rating prizes, non-cash prizes and sections other than Opens do not count and are not included in the eligibility calculation).

Event classes will be determined by the table below. Non-cash prizes will be excluded from the total cashpool.

2.2 Each state can nominate one Class 4 event for the fee of $300 even if the main prize fund is low.

3. Tournament Registration

3.1 Tournaments must be registered with the Grand Prix Director no later than 15 December and the official form (attached) must be accompanied by the appropriate Entry Fee, payable to Australian Chess Enterprises.

3.2 Entries to the Grand Prix will be accepted at the discretion of the Grand Prix Director, who reserves the right to refuse entry or transfer tournaments between classes as necessary. There are no fee reductions or discounts. Late entries may be accepted on payment of a late entry fee of $100.

4. Marketing of the Grand Prix

4.1 The main source of information about the Grand Prix will be the Grand Prix website at www.chessaustralia.com.au

4.2 A list of Grand Prix tournaments will be published on or before 1 January.

4.3 Players are free to enter all tournaments, subject to local conditions.

5. Awarding of Points

5.1 The main Grand Prix Sections for awarding points and prizes will be: OPEN, WOMEN, JUNIOR, GIRLS, U2000, U1600

5.2 Players' ratings will be based on the ACF Rating List published 1 December of the previous year for that event.

5.3 Juniors and Girls must be Under 18 on 1 January.

5.4 Tournament organisers must submit Swissperfect files to the Grand Prix Director within 72 hours of the completion of the event, so that GP scores can be updated and published. Please ensure the ACF Master List is being used to add players in the event rather than typing in players direct. If the ACF Master List is not used this will cause delay in processing the results.

5.5 Players will be awarded points in each Section in accordance with the following table. Only the best 7 scores will be counted towards the total points earned.

Where a tournament is itself divided into sections, then the GP points may be awarded in these sections, provide that this is advertised in advance. For example, at the Doeberl Cup, U2000 points will be awarded in the U2000 event and U1600 points will be awarded in the U1600 event. The tournament Class remains based on the Open.

5.6 Tournament organisers must send a list of the prize winners and an indication of which players are juniors and which are female within 72 hours of the completion of the event, so that GP scores can be updated and published.

6. Prizes

6.1 Prizes will be dependent on sponsorship monies received and will be published on the Grand Prix website.

6.2 Players may only win one cash prize. The Non-Cash prizes (ie. airfares) are bonus prizes additional to the cash prize. Non-Cash prizes (ie. airfares) cannot be redeemed for cash or for anything other than the intended prize. Consolation prizes can only be won by players who have not won a cash prize.

6.3 Players must be members or players registered with their state chess association.

6.4 Players finishing on the same number of points will share prizes where applicable. For display purposes, the player with the least number of events will be displayed first. If still tied, the player with the lower rating shall be displayed first. If still tied, players will be displayed in last name sequence.
